The MSRC Takes Angels Fans Out to the Ball Game

The 2016 baseball season is in full swing, and the MSRC is helping fans of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim get to the games more quickly and with less pollution. Thanks to $128,500 in Clean Transportation Funding from the MSRC, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) will operate the 2016 Angels Express Bus Service, a special bus service between the Goldenwest Transportation Center in Huntington Beach and Angels Stadium in Anaheim for 50 regular season, weekday evening home games. OCTA will use up to four compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to transport fans to the stadium for $4 roundtrip. Not only will using clean-fueled buses help reduce automobile emissions by taking cars off the road that would have been driven by these bus riders, but they also will help reduce traffic in and around the stadium, thereby reducing emissions from additional cars idling while trying to get into the stadium or circling to look for parking. OCTA's goal is to attract more than 9,000 fans to use the bus service during this season. The express bus is intended to serve communities in the western part of Orange County that is not as readily able to access rail service, including Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Westminster and Seal Beach. About 60,000 fans from those areas attended Angels' games last year. The Angels Express Bus Service is designed to complement Angels Express Rail, which takes fans to the stadium for a reduced fare via a special Metrolink service also aimed at reducing congestion and automobile emissions around the stadium. The MSRC helped OCTA launch this service in 2011. The rail program has been so successful over the years that it has now transitioned to utilizing other funding sources for its operation. This five-year partnership between the MSRC and the OCTA to bring Angels fans to home games using cleaner, more efficient transportation options has helped get nearly 200,000 fans out of their cars and onto public transportation to get to Angels Stadium.
