Project Objectives

The purpose of this project was to purchase ten Autocar refuse trucks equipped with Cummins ISL LNG engines to be used to provide the City of Tustin with waste and recycling services. The trucks have a life expectancy of 10 years with an annual fuel consumption of 12,000 diesel equivalent gallons each.

Project Results Description

CR&R has experienced problems with the fueling components of the LNG engines and fueling tanks. The LNG fueling tank system has peformed well. CR&R plans to continue to invest in the training of its mechanics to assist them in dealing with the operational challenges of the LNG trucks. They believe as their fleet grows and the mechanics become more experienced with the LNG vehicles, fleet performance will improve. However, CC&R continues to have concerns about the longevity of the LNG engine platform. CR&R has found Clean Energy to be a reliable fuel provider but CR&R would like to see the spectrum of fuel providers expand.

California
Project Status Description

All ten LNG vehicles were in operation within the City of Tustin as of August 2008. Delivery of the vehicles was delayed due to factory issues. CR&R has been using Republic's LNG fueling facility in the City of Anaheim to fuel the Tustin fleet rather than its fueling station in San Juan Capistrano. The Anaheim faciity is closer to Tustin than San Juan Capistrano.
