The City of San Bernardino selected the Autocar refuse collection truck equipped with the Cummins ISL G dedicated liquefied natural gas engine as the replacement for the older diesel trucks. The new vehicles are certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) at a NOx emission standard below 0.2.g/bhp-hr. This is the cleanest heavy-duty truck engine commerically available. The City purchased seven (7) side loader, three (3) front loaders, one (1) roll-off, and one (1) rear loader refuse collection vehicles.
The purpose of this project was to replace twelve older diesel-fueled refuse collection vehicles with alternative fuel vehicles. With the support of MSRC Clean Transportation Funding, the City was able to purchase twelve new, LNG refuse collection trucks equipped with the cleanest heavy-duty truck engine commerically available.
The project was successfully implemented and all twelve vehicles are operating in regular refuse collection service. The City of San Bernardino is continuing their efforts to train all fleet maintenance personnel on the safe servicing and repair of CNG and LNG vehicles, as well as conducting ongoing classes for vehicle operators in the safe operation and refueling of LNG trucks. In addition, the City is completing maintenance facility modifications to allow inside repair of natural gas fuel vehicles.
All twelve new vehicles are operating within the City of San Bernardino refuse collection fleet. The older diesel vehicles have been retired from service.
