Purchase and deployment of the CNG waste collection trucks began in November 2008. The vehicles were purchased from Rush Peterbilt and Diversified Truck Center. The engine specified in all thirty trucks is the Cummins ISL G natural gas engine. This engine is currently the lowest emitting heavy-duty engine commercially available, and is certified by the California Air Resources Board below the 2010 emissions certification standard of 0.02 grams per brake-horsepower hour (g/bhp-hr).
The purpose of this project was to continue the transition from diesel fuel to low emission, compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel for Ware Disposal's fleet of refuse collection vehicles. This project purchased thirty (30) new refuse trucks.
Ware Disposal has not experienced any significant issues with the operation of the CNG trucks since their deployment. The new vehicles have been operating in revenue service high a high level of reliability. In addition, Ware Disposal has received has received positive feedback from both their customers as well as their drivers.
All thirty trucks were received and placed into revenue service as of May 27, 2009. Ware Disposal and their project partner Clean Energy developed a public outreach plan for their website that included information about compressed natural gas, the MSRC and their Clean Transportation Funding Program, as well as the air quality benefits realized through the use of low emission alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, all trucks are labeled with a decal denoting both the use of clean natural gas fuel as well as a decal highlighting the funding assistance provided by the MSRC.
