Clean Air Roadmap - November, 2019
With a grant awarded by the MSRC, researchers at the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation (LCI) have identified workplace locations in the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) high demand for electric vehicle charging, and consequently high potential to increase zero-emission miles traveled and reduce local air pollution. LCI conducted this study in order to support local governments and utilities in making data-driven decisions on where to invest in charging equipment and electrical capacity.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) continued its commitment to utilize the lowest emission natural gas engines in its bus fleet with a recent project to retrofit 395 buses with the Cummins L9M Near-Zero emission engines. The MSRC provided $1.87 million in Clean Transportation Funding to support the replacement of 125 of the existing Cummins ISLG 280 horse power engines in Metro’s fleet of 45-foot series composite buses with the new lower emission near-zero engines.
When the City of Duarte rolled out its new electric transit buses last spring, it became the first city in Southern California with an all-electric transit fleet. The City purchased two 35-foot Proterra electric buses and is leasing to buy a third bus in partnership with Foothill Transit. These buses add to Foothill Transit’s fleet of more than 30 electric buses, which have driven nearly 2 million electric miles to serve residents in the San Gabriel Valley.
