The City of Santa Clarita issued Requests for Proposals for the construction of the CNG station and vehicle purchase.
The objective of the project was to purchase two medium duty Ford F150 compressed natural gas (CNG) pick up trucks with 5.4L, 260 hp engines, one heavy-duty GMC asphalt truck with a Deere .608 280 hp CNG engine, one heavy duty Freightliner FL/50 Aerial Lift with Cummins B5.9G 195 hp CNG fueled engine, and one heavy duty GMC stake bed truck with a GMC 5700 V8 Vortec 195 hp CNG engine. The City shall also construct one CNG fueling station. The vehicles have a life expectancy of 10 years. The vehicles will be used by the Citys Water and Power Department as transportation for Water Treatment Plant operators
The station is complete and vehicles are in service. The City is pleased with the performance of the vehicles and fueling station, and plan to purchase additional fleet vehicles. The City reports that the project experienced a few minor barriers. The first barrier occurred in the ordering of the specialized heavy-duty vehicles. In the future, more lead time will be allocated to find companies that can provide the City with more options for vehicle accessories. The second lessons learned is to correctly determine the type of CNG filling station to meet the operational needs of the City fleet. Operational efficiency for City divisions using CNG vehicles has increased slightly over conventional powered vehicles as the new CNG vehicles can be fueled on site. Diesel and gasoline vehicles are fueled off-site.
