The City of Redondo Beach expanded the capacity of their existing fast-fill compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station. The original station was constructed in 1999 and adequately served the needs of the City for a few years. However, with the addition of two (2) CNG heavy-duty street sweepers, and the planned acquision of nine paratransit vehicles in 2004, the station throughput capacity was no longer adequate to satisfy the City's fleet fueling requirements. The refueling station expansion consisted of the installation of an additional CNG compressor and a gas dryer. This doubled the throughput capacity, and also added a slow-fill capability that did not exist prior to station expansion. The specific equipment included the following: One ANGI Model CNG-75 Compressor; One Xebec Model STR20NGX Autodew Dryer; One Time-fill (slow fill) Panel; Three Two-hose Time Fill Posts.

All areas of the South Coast AQMD benefit from this project, as a reduction in ozone precursor emissions in the Western portion of the District reduce ozone formation in the Inland areas of the AQMD.
The City projects a CNG fleet of 25 vehicles in 2004, with six additional medium/heavy-duty vehicles to be added over the next five years. The 25 current vehicles consist of 14 light duty vehicles, two heavy-duty street sweepers, and nine paratransit buses. Total miles accrued by the CNG vehicles exceed 345,000 miles annually. This equates to an annual emissions reduction estimated as follows: Reactive Organic Gases (ROG): 14 pounds Oxides of Nitrogen NOx): 2,007 pounds Carbon Monoxide (CO/7): 83 pounds Particulate Matter (PM10): 910 pounds
