The Hollywood Yard is one of many yards operated by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Street Services. It is the base of operations for a variety of street maintenance activities for the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. The yard serves as the home base for a fleet of eight (8) street sweepers as well as several medium and heavy duty vehicles.
In accordance with AQMD Fleet Rules, the City of Los Angeles has been actively retiring its fleet of diesel-powered sweepers and medium and heavy-duty vehicles and replacing them with natural-gas powered models.
The City of Los Angeles has embarked on an ambitious program to install fueling infrastructure at several City yards, including a CNG fueling facility at the Hollywood Yard.
Initial planning and design for the project began in November 2007, with the City’s Department of Public Works-Bureau of Engineering handling preliminary design activities. A Request for Bid was issued in January 2009 with a contract awarded to the successful bidder, Golden Acquisition Corp (dba EFS West) in June 2010. Construction activities began in late July 2010.
Construction is complete and the project has been accepted by the City. The station is now under a one-year warranty period.
The objective of this project was to provide a time-fill CNG fueling station to provide fuel to ten (10) CNG vehicles. In addition, a limited fast-fill dispenser would be provided in order to provide ""spot" fueling as needed.
The scope of this project included: installation of two 200-HP compressors, gas dryer, storage tubes, five dual-hose time fill posts, one limited fast-fill dispenser, and alarm systems, fencing, signage, and emergency shut down devices. In addition, the contractor provided training to City staff of the operation and function of the fueling system.
The success of this and other CNG projects undertaken by the City can provide the blueprint for future implementation at similar City sites
The station has been successfully constructed and is now capable of providing time-fill CNG fueling and as-needed "spot" fueling to the fleet of CNG vehicles based at this yard.
