Project Background

Contractor operated methanol-fueled trucks and yard hostlers (an off-road truck) and a diesel-fueled control vehicle over a period of one year. Emission testing documented the operational emissions of one methanol-fueled vehicle in comparison with one diesel control vehicle.

Project Implementation

The machinery operated within the confines of the Port of Long Beach. The off-shore wind directs air inland toward the City of Long Beach and adjoining communities. The reduction of emissions would be realized in these areas.

Project Results Description

The three methanol trucks, when compared to their diesel counterparts, reduced Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions by 0.4 tons and Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions by 0.13 tons.

Project Status Description

Data evaluation, fuel facility construction information, and the comparative analysis of the fuel economy, performance, and maintenance records for methanol and diesel vehicles.
