Contractor developed and demonstrated the technical feasibility of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel for heavy-duty trucks. Field testing and demonstration of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) LNG truck engine was conducted at two sites. Walmart and Unocal participated by operating a heavy-duty tractor repowered with the Series 60G engine in regular service. Unocal's vehicle operates out of their Los Angeles Terminal. The vehicle travels approximately 250 miles per day, carrying 80,000 pounds of diesel fuel to a delivery station, unloading the fuel, and returning to reload. Walmart's truck operates out of the Porterville, California, distribution center and averages 500 miles per day traveling either fixed routes or dispatched to various destinations on demand.

The trucks were driven in Northern California in a 250-mile radius of Porterville, and in Southern California in a 250-mile radius of Los Angeles. The reduced emission pollution of these vehicles benefits large areas of California.
Based upon emission numbers certified by the Series 50G, the Series 60G engine is expected to be certified at a level of 2.5 g/bhp-hr NOx and particulate matter below 0.1 g/bhp-hr. The estimated NOx emissions reductions are 0.51 ton annually.
