Contractor tested, in actual service, the first original equipment, zero-emission electric school bus. This protype will be examined on actual route conditions prior to the California Energy Commission buying a group of this type of vehicle. The electric bus will be compared to advanced diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and methanol-fueled vehicles currently being used in the fleet.

The City of Lancaster, a designated a "Clean Air City", is the primary beneficiary of the zero-emission bus. The Antelope Valley School District encompasses areas outside city limits. The areas of ultimate benefit encompass the school district, the city and areas adjacent to the bus routes.
The vehicle purchased replaces a 1966 Gillig 79-passenger school bus with a 220 Cummins engine averaging 15,000 miles per year. The emissions reduced by the electric vehicle are projected to be 394 pounds per year.
