The purpose of this project was to implement a large-scale introduction of alternative-fuel heavy-duty vehicles in both government and private industry fleets. Battelle, as the prime contractor for this project, compiled mileage and fuel use data over the contract period of performance on identified control vehicles. When available, vehicle maintenance data was also collected and compared to comparable diesel vehicles operating at the fleet demonstration sites. Four fleets were included in the project, resulting in the deployment of a total of thirty-four natural gas vehicles, as follows: SunLine Services Group - Ten CNG street sweepers, The City of Long Beach - Five CNG refuse collection vehicles, Taormina Industries - Fourteen LNG refuse collection vehicles, Waste Management of the Desert - Five CNG refuse collection vehicles.
