Omnitrans is transitioning their fleet of diesel buses to low-emission buses fueled with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Under this project, Omnitrans purchased 28 full-size CNG transit buses to replace diesel vehicles. The vehicles were purchased from New Flyer of America, Inc., and met the following specifications: - 40-foot length, low-floor design; - Meets all ADA requirements; - Dedicated CNG engine certified to CARB Optional NOx Standard; - Includes bicycle racks, Omnitrans operates in a 480 square mile area of the San Bernardino Valley. Omnitrans also provides dial-a-ride services and is a partner in the Inland Empire Conection express bus service linking Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario International Airport, and Montclair. Based upon Omnitrans' experience, cleaner buring natural gas promotes longer engine life and results in lower vehicle maintenance costs. The CNG storage cylinders are stronger and safer than gasoline or diesel tanks. CNG cylinders undergoe rigorous government testing, including severe physical impact and combustion testing. Also, in the unlikely event of a leak or rupture, natural gas, being less dense than air, dissipates harmlessly into the atmosphere.

San Bernardino County benefits from reduced particulate matter emissions, including diesel particulate which is classified as a Toxic Air Contaminant. The South Coast Air Basin benefits from the reduced ozone precursor emissions of the clean fuel bus.
Omnitrans operates their CNG buses for 12 years. The 28 CNG buses will reduce approximately 19,890 pounds (9.95 tons)of NOx emissions annually within the South Coast Air District. This equates to approximately 238,695 pounds of NOx over the life of the vehicles.
