Waste Management's CNG Waste Collection Vehicle Program was initiated to accelerate the fleet's transition from diesel fuel to lower-emission alternative fuel. To date, fifty-one (51) CNG waste collection vehicles have been purchased for Waste Management's Coachella Valley operations. The fourteen vehicles purchased under this project will operate within the City of Palm Desert. Waste Management's objective is to convert the entire Coachella Valley fleet to CNG over the next two years. A component of the overall project was the construction of a new CNG fueling station at Waste Management's operations yard in Palm Desert. The station is owned and operated by Pickens Fuel Corporation. The station has an element that is publicly accessible on a 24-hour basis and provides overnight, or "time-fill", refueling.
