Anaheim Convention Center Electric Tram Project

Contract Number

Project Background

The City of Anaheim sponsored the development of two (2) advanced technology electric trams to be used at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Convention Center underwent an expansion, making it one of the largest convention and conference facilities in the Western United States. The Center now spans approximately 1.5 miles, making it difficult for individuals to walk from the surrounding parking facilities, exhibit halls, and conference rooms. The availability of the electric tram service makes the Anaheim Convention Center the only facility in the nation that provides an on-campus transportation service to its clients and delegates. Each electric tram consists of one "power car", which houses the majority of the electric drivetrain components, and two trailers. Each trailer provides storage for 48 lead-acid batteries that power the electric tram and an on-board charging unit. Trams can be operated with one or both trailers dependent upon demand for service and anticipated ridership, duration of operations, etc. The carrying capacity of each tram is 68 passengers, or 64 passengers when the wheel chair positions are in use. The day-to-day operation of the electric tram program is the responsibility of a local transportation management association, the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN). ATN administers the contract for the entire Anaheim Resort Transit System. The Convention Center Electric Tram program is part of the transportation services available to all hotels and guests of the Anaheim Resort. The first tram was completed in December, 2000. Upon completion of acceptance testing, the tram was delivered to the Convention Center in May 2001. The second tram was delivered in August 2001. As of August 1, 2002, Tram #1 had accumulated 1,207 miles; tram #2 had accumulated 638 miles.

Project Implementation

The guests of the Anaheim Convention Center benefit directly from reduced exposure to harmful exhaust emissions. Also, the entire SCAQMD region benefits from the use of zero-emission vehicles as opposed to diesel-fueled vehicle due to the elimination of ozone forming NOx and hydrocarbon emissions and toxic diesel particulate matter.

Project Results Description

Actual NOx emissions reductions from project start through August 1, 2002 equal approximately 70 pounds. Projected annual NOx reductions for both trams equals approximately 1.33 tons.

Project Status Description

The Final Report includes a summary of the tram program, issues encountered and their resolution, and detailed records of tram operations to date.
