Waste Management of Orange County purchased twenty-five (25) compressed natural gas (CNG) refuse collection trucks. All 25 vehicles are located at Waste Management's Irvine, California service yard. All vehicles were in service as of December 31, 2002. Of the 25 vehicles purchased, 21 trucks are configured with the Volvo chassis with the Amrep automated body. The Volvo trucks are powered by the Cummins C8.3 or C8.3+ dedicated CNG engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at the optional low-NOx standard. The remaining four vehicles are Mack trucks with Wittke front-loader bodies. These vehicle utilize the Mack E-7 12 liter natural gas engines. These engines are also certified at the optional low-NOx standard. Each vehicle has a CNG storage capacity equivalent to 60 gallons of diesel fuel. Under normal operating conditions, the vehicles can complete a workday without the need to refuel. The CNG fuel storgage tanks are located on the top of the truck's collection body. The CNG station located on-site at Waste Management's Irvine facility provides overnight "time-fill" refueling. Waste Management states that this is a convenient, labor saving method of refueling the vehicles. In addition, time-fill refueling at night, when the air temperature is cooler, allows a greater amount of fuel to be placed aboard each vehicle, maximizing the vehicles range.

The City of Irvine directly benefits from a reduction in fine diesel particulate. Also, all areas of the South Coast AQMD benefit from the reduction in NOx, an ozone precursor.
Annual emission reductions for the 25 trucks are as follows: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 23,398 pounds reduced annually.
The final report includes a project abstract, summary and conclusions, project challenges and lessons learned, recommendations, and quantified emission reductions.
