Ralphs Grocery Company purchased three (3) off-road YT30 Ottawa yard tractors used to move trailers at their grocery distribution center. The tractors were demontrated within each of the counties that comprise the South Coast AQMD; Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino. The refueling of the vehicles was conducted at the Ralphs facility located in Glendale. The vehicles are equipped with the Cummins 5.9 liquid petroleum gas (LPG) engine, certifed by the California Air Resources Board at the Optional NOx standard of 2.5 g/bhp-hr. This is compared to the emissions level of a new off-road diesel engine at 6.9 g/bhp-hr. The new LPG-fueled yard tractors replaced older, high polluting diesel-fueled vehicles. Each yard tractor has an anticipated life expectancy of ten (10) years. The estimated annual hours of vehicle operation is 4,900 hours. The average operating cost of the LPG tractors was $3.99 per hour as compared to $2.47 per hour for the older diesel yard tractor. Maintenance costs of the new LPG tractors was $1.57 per hour, compared to $2.17 per hour for the older diesel units.

Communities in proximity to Ralphs Grocery Distribution centers benefited directly from this project. Also, a larger portion of the South Coast AQMD benefits from the reduction in ozone precusor emissions attributable to this project.
The estimated annual emissions reductions are as follows: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 5,459 pounds per year per tractor (2.73 tons) Three tractors yields a total annual NOx reduction of 8.19 tons.
The Final Report is comprehensive and includes an Introduction, Summary and Conclusions, Discussion, Emission Reduction calculations, and appendices documenting previously submitted quarterly reports, correspondence, and engine certification documentation.
