The Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority (MARTA) constructed a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, propane) refueling station to service their fleet of LPG transit buses. MARTA operates 30-foot transit vehicles, as well as cutaway paratransit buses and an LPG-fueled tourist trolley. The refueling station is located at 41939 Fox Farm Road in Big Bear Lake. MARTA contracted with Industrial Specialist for the purchase and installation of the refueling station. The station is equipped with 3,900 gallons of LPG storage and one fuel dispenser. In addition to station construction, MARTA conducted on-site training of their maintenance employees in the safe refueling of LPG vehicles. The training was conducted in August and September of 2001 and again in March of 2002. The training was provided by Cummins Cal Pacific.

The Big Bear Lakes region of the South Coast AQMD is the primary beneficiary of MARTA's clean bus programs.
Alternative fuel infrastructure is an essential element of an overall alternative fuel fleet. To avoid double counting, however, the emissions reductions attributable to this project are quantified as they relate to bus operations. This is in keeping with California Air Resources Board guidance.
The Final Report includes a summary of all tasks accomplished under the project, a discussion of project results and conclusions, and photographs of the completed LPG refueling station.
