Cattrac Construction replaced worn-out, unregulated diesel engines in three pieces of off-road construction equipment with new Tier 1 lower-emission diesel engines. The vehicles included a Caterpillar 824C rubber tire dozer; a Caterpillar 621 scraper/waterpull truck, and a Caterpillar D8L track dozer. The project was initiated in May, 2004 with engine re-powers competed as of January 2005. Cattrac has prior experience in performing engine re-powers; thus, very few issues were encountered during this project. All installation work was performed in-house, including fabrication of new brackets needed to accomodate accessory drives associated with the new Tier 1 engines. The contractor noted in their report that the new engines offer significantly better fuel economy; this is especially attractive in light of current fuel prices.

All areas within the South Coast AQMD benefit from reductions in ozone precursor emissions and diesel particulate matter. The residents adjacent to the construction site directly benefit from reductions in diesel particulate, which is designated as a toxic air contaminant.
The estimated emission reductions attributable to this re-power project are as follows: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 5.38 tons per year
