Bid specifications were prepared detailing a CNG chassis, emission control compliance, and vehicle performance. Purchase orders for both refuse haulers were created and both vehicles were delivered in June 2007. The first vehicle was placed into service in July 2007. The second vehicle had issues and was placed into service in October 2007.
The objective of this project was to remove 2 diesel fueled refuse haulers and replace them with clean fueled compressed natural gas fueled refuse haulers. Life expectancy on these new trucks is approximately 10 years.
Trucks removed from service were both powered by Detroit Diesel 6-71 DDEC diesel fueled engines. By replacing these two (2) trucks with truck fueled by CNG, the City of Whittier is reducing PM emissions by .17 tons annually and NOx emissions by .49 tons annually.
