EDCO purchased the eleven new refuse collection trucks from EW Trucks & Equipment, located in San Diego, CA. The truck model selected was the Expediter, manufactured by Autocar. The truck body manufacturers were C.W.S. Industries, located in Vernon, and Refuse Power Systems, located in Simi Valley. Final vehicle assemble was conducted by Agility Trucks in Fontana. Two vehicle configurations were purchased - front loader trucks, which are primarily used in commercial waste collection operations, and automated side loaders, which are used in residential trash pickup. The eleven new refuse trucks replaced older diesel trucks that were relocated outside of the South Coast AQMD on a permanent basis. The new CNG refuse trucks are equipped with the Cummins ISL G 8.9L engine, certified by the California Air Resources Board at a NOx emissions rating of 0.13 g/bhp-hr, making this one of the lowest-emitting heavy-duty engines commercially available.
The objective of this project was to remove from service eleven (11) older diesel fueled solid waste collection vehicles and replace them with new, state-of-the-art trucks fueled with compressed natural gas (CNG).
The new refuse trucks are anticipated to operate approximately 1,189 hour per year per vehicle.
All eleven vehicles have been received and are currently operating in revenue service in the City of Buena Park. To date, no serious technical issues have been encountered.
