Off-road construction equipment exhaust is a significant source of both diesel particulate matter, a toxic air contaminant, and oxides of nitrogen, which are ozone precursor emissions. This is especially true for older, unregulated off-road heavy-duty diesel engines. A cost-effective strategy to reduce emissions from off-road construction equipment is replace the older engine with a new, CARB-certified lower emitting diesel engine.

Valley Power Systems, the regional factory distributor for Detroit Diesel and Deutz engines, performed the re-powers for Varner Construction. The Wabco 35C rock truck re-power replaced the uncertified Detroit Diesel 12-71T diesel engine with a Tier 3 certified Detroit Diesel Series 60 diesel engine. Four Wabco 222G scrapers were also re-powered, replacing the uncertified Detroit Diesel 8-71T diesel engine with the Tier 3 certified Deutz TCD2015 diesel engine.
The objective of this project was to re-power five (5) pieces of off-road construction equipment with new, lower-emitting CARB certified diesel engines. "Re-powering" involves the removal and scrapping of the old diesel engine and the installation of a new diesel engine, as well as any additional equipment modifications necessary to accomodate the new technology diesel engine. In this project Varner Construction Inc. re-powered one (1) Wabco 35C Rock Truck and four (4) Wabco 222G scrapers with new, CARB certified heavy-duty diesel engines.
All repowers are complete and no significant problems with the equipment has been encountered. At this time, the equipment is operating in construction service with no technical or performance issues.
The first re-power was completed at the end of June, 2006. The last equipment re-power was completed in mid-August 2007. All repowers are complete and the equipment has been placed in operational service. According to Varner Construction, the Tier 3 electronically controlled engines are operating well.
